Ostara! Spring has sprung!

Spring Mantel 2014 - www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

After what seems like an interminably long (and very soggy!) winter, spring has finally sprung!

Yay!

Meteorologically, the first day of spring falls on March 1st in the Northern Hemisphere. However, for those of us who recognise the astronomical seasons, spring begins with the Vernal or Spring Equinox, otherwise known as Ostara or Eostre, which occurs around March 20th or 21st.

Regardless of what you call it, everyone feels the massive pull of the new season and the magic that this time of year brings. It takes a soul of steel not to appreciate the miracle of rebirth, as evenings get lighter and all around us Mother Nature springs into life, gifting us with blossom, buds and swathes of crocuses and daffodils.

And seriously, WHO can resist the lure all those chocolate eggs, already filling our supermarket shelves? I definitely can't. I've already had more than my fair share!

Ostara's symbolism is as old as the Pagan festival itself. Eggs and rabbits represent fertility and, as daylight hours increase, the Anglo-Saxon Goddess Ostara is celebrated as the bringer of increased light.

Just like those New Year's resolutions, Ostara is a wonderful time to start afresh, to access new ideas and start a new venture.

Mine is this blog. What's yours?
