The ramblings of a blogger in recovery

b2ap3_thumbnail_GetWellSoon.PNG

Apologies for the radio silence, dear reader but, as some of you already know or may have gathered from my recent Wordless Wednesday post, I've recently undergone some surgery.

I won't go into detail; suffice to say my op was considered one of the "majors" and carries a 6-8 recovery period. The good news is, I'm already two weeks into my recuperation and I'm feeling surprisingly well.

I'll be honest, I didn't do much in the way of reading up about the op or the recovery but I have to say, the little I did read had me thinking I'd be practically bed-bound for the best part of two months.

Nah…!

Autumn Mantel

Autumn Mantel by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

With each turn of the yearly wheel comes a great swathe of seasonal decorating ideas. Pinterest or Instagram users cannot fail to have noticed all the wonderful images of Autumn's influence in the home.

If you've been following along with my ramblings, you'll know that I like to decorate my mantel for each of the ancient festivals, such as Ostara (Easter) and Samhain (Hallowe'en).

But since launching The World of Suzy Homemaker and my ever-increasing use of the word "pretty" (!), I've also had a hankering for updating my mantel with the Seasons.

Even more so since my recent fireplace surround and mantel makeover!

The mighty apple: make the most of your autumn harvest

Cooking up your apple harvest | www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Whether you mark the changing of the seasons meteorologically like the weathermen, or astronomically like our ancestors, September means one sure thing to us all...

Autumn! (Or "Fall", for those across the puddle.)

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, the passing of mid-September's Autumn Equinox means the days are getting shorter and the nights are starting to draw in. Even on sunny days, there's a nip in the air. But, with the end of summer comes big, fat, juicy fruits... ripe and ready to pick.

For me, nothing represents the autumn harvest quite like the mighty apple!

Forever autumn: Mabon

 Forever Autumn - www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Well, maybe "forever" is a bit of an exaggeration, but when the wheel of the year starts to turn from summer to autumn and dreary days and dark nights seem to stretch endlessly ahead, it can feel as though there's little to look forward to.

All around, nature is slowing down and preparing for winter.

Deer at Knole Park, Kent by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

While colder weather might make us want to hunker down like these deer at Kent's wonderful Knole Park, today's Autumn Equinox spells the start of an incredibly busy season.

Transfer photos from your iOS Device to your iMac – the simple way!

The iPhone is reputedly the world's most popular camera (according to Apple!) and yet, when it comes to saving those precious snaps to your computer, so many people get confused... including me!

Call me a dinosaur, but I like to housekeep computer files manually. That includes photos.

With the changes to camera roll and photostream in the recent iOS8 update, it's more important than ever to keep your images organised, but how?

Although a relatively recent iMac convert, I've been using iOS devices for several years now and merrily snap away on both the iPhone and iPad. But it wasn't until recently that I got my head around the best way to transfer photos between my mobile devices and my desktop.

Yes, my mac has iPhoto but for some reason, it's an application that makes very little sense to me. (Translation... possibly because of my fanatical housekeeping tendencies!)

The making of a personalised DIY house sign

The making of a personalised DIY house sign by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Every home needs a name.

The previous owners of OneandSeventy had theirs carved into a beautiful piece of wood, which was still hanging over the door when we moved in. After a year of looking at it and wondering how to make it ours, I finally had a brainwave.

The making of a personalised DIY house sign by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Using some good old-fashioned carbon paper and a (fairly) steady hand, I upcycled this weather-beaten monstrosity into a gorgeous personalised house sign, which now takes pride of place at the front of our home.

Creating kerb appeal

Creating kerb appeal by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

They say it takes just eight seconds for a potential buyer to decide whether they like a property.

Eight seconds!

That's about as long as it takes to read the first few paragraphs of this blog post!

From swanky city apartments, to "two up, two downs" and cottages with white picket fences, dream homes aren't necessarily grand palatial affairs. But what they do have is the "wow" factor, even before you cross the threshold.

Tasting the Grain: Whisky Shop Exclusives by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Welcome back dram drinkers! I have gone ALL WEEK without a whisky and I am gagging!

This latest edition features six whiskies that can only be bought at The Whisky Shop. Just as well I'm a member of the W Club then, or I might have missed out on sampling these!

Loch Fyne Premium Scotch Whisky

We were welcomed with a glass of Loch Fyne. If you've been reading the blog for a while, you'll remember this isn't the first time I've had the opportunity to try this whisky.
