Hallway Makeover – The (almost) Big Reveal

Walls – PAINTED

Hideous orange varnish – GONE

Lights – BLOODY GORGEOUS!

No word of a lie, I have been making over OneandSeventy's hallway for EVER... in my head at least. But now, it's actually starting to come together for real and I am SO excited to share our progress so far.

Hallways are notorious pains in the backside to decorate. Essentially two rooms, with lots of walls, doorways and high landing ceilings, they're unquestionably my least favourite space to tackle. But the end result is so worth it; the impact a welcoming hallway can have on a home cannot be underestimated.

Fortunately, Beloved was so sick of me banging on about my plans, he eventually took pity on me and offered to help.

This, dear reader, is HUGE! My wonderful man is the most amazing Hubby in the world and as anyone who knows me will attest, he will do absolutely anything for me. But painting?

Errrr, no.

Painting is most definitely where he draws the line.

And frankly, I'll be lucky if ever picks up a brush or roller again after this job!

Creating a Monochrome Hallway

Bye-Bye boring blue. Hello glorious grey!

Gone are walls of nondescript, pale blue and their metallic blue neighbours.

I kid you not.

In their place, crisp white and 'City Break' grey by Crown, which I had colour-matched by my go-to paint of choice - Valspar.

I was really worried about covering the metallic sheen, but the Valspar went on beautifully.

Unlike the white.

Even a 10ltr tub of Leyland Trade Contract Matt Emulsion struggled. Despite being such a light colour, the pale blue kept bleeding through! In the end, it took 4 COATS and almost the entire tub!

This did not go down well with Beloved, as you can imagine. But give him his due, he persevered and did a magnificent job!

Love that man.

Painting over varnish

Naturally, when painting a room, it makes sense to freshen the woodwork, which tends to yellow with age. I also painted over the varnish on the banisters, as you may have spied in some of my recent posts.

Even the dark of Halloween cannot dim the bright white of newly-painted banisters!

I cannot tell you how relieved I am to eradicate all that orange. It makes such a massive difference to the space. It now looks fresh, modern, and also brings some much-needed light to our North-facing hallway, which is even more important now that we've had our front door replaced.

As lovely as it is (and I can't wait to bring you the full reveal later!) moving from one large window to two smaller panes has reduced what little light we had coming in.

Which is where the new bling comes in.

Isn't. That. Just. FABULOUS dahlink?

Thank you Wayfair!

At £99 each they weren't cheap, but my Anitas are fantastic quality and look absolutely stunning. They definitely hit the spot when it comes to my criteria of style WITH substance!

They were a bit of a steal if I'm honest. I had some credit in my account following my collaboration with Wayfair last year, as well as some accumulated Wayfair Rewards. Mind you, it was just as well, as what I saved on lights I had to pay out for an electrician to come and install them!

Ho hum.

Still. At least I know they're fitted correctly and safely AND I've discovered a great local company for all those jobs I need doing.

Bonus!

So what do you think of the hallway makeover so far?

There's still a lot to do but aside from the flooring and two new side windows, we've broken the back of the big jobs.

Phew!

While I recoup and save some pennies for those, I shall just have to keep myself amused with accessorising. I have plans for that great expanse of bare grey wall and I already have some artwork on the go. Meanwhile, work is also in progress on a new console.

After months of discounting a myriad of options due to their price tags, I found one in TK Maxx for... wait for it... £26! Talk about a lucky break! A slight bit of damage relegated her to the sale corner, but my bargain-hunting nose sniffed her out and home she came! A little TLC and a paint job and she'll fit right in.

Stay tuned for more on that as well as all the details of the makeover, including that new door...which is one of a pair.

Oh! And just WAIT until you see what I have for you on the landing!

A hui hou,

I really like it. I am looking for a similar colour for the utility which I am planning to be a nautical theme. Great job. #MakingHome

Thanks Annie. Originally, I'd planned for a darker grey, but with the new door reducing the light, I'm quite happy with the City Grey. Looking forward to seeing your decorated utility room!
